Large White

The Large White pig is a breed of domestic pig originating in Yorkshire. It is also known as the Yorkshire pig and the English Large White pig. It is one of the most popular and numerous of all pig breeds and is widely used in crossbreeding and upgrading for intensive pig farming systems. Farmers rely on this breed for its excellent performance in both pork and bacon production.

Physically, Large Whites are distinguished by their erect ears and slightly dished faces. They are long-bodied with well-developed hams and fine white hair. Their size is large, with picturesque bearing and excellent conformation. Mature boars weigh on average 365 kg, while sows weigh around 280 kg. Dressing percentages range from 68–77%.

Large White sows are very prolific, producing litters of 10 to 12 piglets. They have high milk production and excellent maternal instincts, which make them ideal for intensive production systems. The breed matures relatively late but performs well under good management. Farmers favor them for their versatility and hardiness, as they can withstand a wide range of climatic conditions. However, their lack of pigmentation makes them prone to sunburn, so access to mud baths and shade is necessary.

The breed is heavily used in crossbreeding and rotational breeding programs. Sows have an enviable reputation as dams and form the foundation of the classic F1 hybrid gilt. Their consistency in production and maternal performance ensures that Large Whites remain the preferred breed both in Kenya and internationally.
