Guinea fowl

Guinea fowl are kept for meat, egg production, feathers, insect and rodent control, security, and aesthetic value. They are widely distributed across all regions of Kenya and exist in both wild and domesticated systems. The most common types are the red wattle, blue wattle, and vulturine guinea fowl.

Guinea fowl show diverse physical characteristics. Plumage color includes grey, black, white, blue, and mixed, while patterns may be speckled, mottled, or plain. Feathers are smooth in structure. The headcap skin color varies between white, red, and blue, and the wattle can be red or blue. Eye color is brown or black, while the beak appears black or grey. The shank color ranges from grey to black.

Mature birds weigh between 1 and 2 kg. They produce 170 to 180 eggs per year. Guinea fowl reach first egg production at 28 to 32 weeks.
