Ducks

Ducks are kept mainly for meat and egg production and are distributed across all regions of Kenya. The most common type is the Muscovy duck. They are well adapted to a wide range of production systems and contribute significantly to household food security and income.

Ducks have plumage that is white or black with a plain pattern and smooth feather structure. Their eyes are yellow or dark, while the beak appears black or yellow. The caruncle is red or black, and the shank color ranges from black, grey, to yellow.

Male ducks weigh between 2.5 and 3.0 kg, while females weigh between 2.0 and 2.5 kg. The dressed carcass weight ranges from 1.5 to 2.0 kg. Ducks produce between 220 and 290 eggs per year.

Male ducks reach sexual maturity at 11 to 12 months, while females reach sexual maturity earlier at 6 to 8 months.
