Cardamom

Cardamom is a perennial spice crop grown for its aromatic seed pods, widely used in food, beverages, and herbal products. It ranks among the most valuable spices globally and provides strong income potential where conditions are suitable. In Kenya, cardamom grows mainly in humid highland areas such as Murang’a, Nyeri, Meru, Embu, and parts of Kakamega. The plant forms leafy clumps and produces green capsules near the base that contain fragrant seeds. Its expanding demand in domestic spice markets and export trade supports its importance as a high-value specialty crop.

Varieties
Common cardamom types include Malabar, Mysore, and Vazhukka. These varieties differ in capsule size, plant vigor, yield potential, and adaptability to moisture conditions. Some produce larger pods with stronger aroma, while others perform better under varying rainfall levels. Variety selection influences productivity and market quality.

Climate & Soil
Cardamom grows well in cool, humid tropical climates with temperatures between 15–28 °C and annual rainfall of 1,500–3,000 mm. It performs best at altitudes of 900–2,000 m in fertile, well-drained loamy soils rich in organic matter with a pH of 5.5–6.5. The plant thrives under partial shade and steady soil moisture but does not tolerate prolonged drought or waterlogging.

Growth & Propagation
Cardamom develops from rhizomes or seedlings and forms dense clumps with upright leafy shoots. Flowering occurs near the base of the plant, followed by the formation of green capsules containing aromatic seeds. Continuous vegetative growth supports regular harvesting once the crop matures.

Nutritional Value
Cardamom seeds contain essential oils, antioxidants, and small amounts of minerals. These compounds support digestion, freshen breath, and contribute to general wellness.
