Black Pepper

Black pepper is a climbing perennial spice crop grown for its pungent dried berries, commonly known as peppercorns. It is one of the world’s most valuable spices and supports both culinary and medicinal uses. In Kenya, it grows mainly in warm and humid regions such as the Coastal belt, parts of Western Kenya, and selected irrigated zones in Central Kenya. The crop climbs on support trees or trellises and produces spikes of small berries harvested and dried for spice markets. Its high value and strong demand in local and export markets make it a promising diversification crop for smallholder and commercial growers.

Varieties
Common black pepper varieties include Karimunda, Panniyur-1, Panniyur-2, and Kuching. These varieties differ in yield potential, berry size, growth vigor, and tolerance to pests and diseases. Some varieties mature earlier, while others produce higher-quality peppercorns suitable for export markets.

Climate & Soil
Black pepper thrives in warm tropical climates with temperatures between 23–32 °C and annual rainfall of 1,200–2,500 mm. It grows best at low to medium altitudes in fertile, well-drained loamy soils rich in organic matter with a pH of 5.5–6.5. The plant performs well under partial shade and steady moisture but does not tolerate waterlogged soils.

Growth & Propagation
Black pepper grows from stem cuttings and develops as a woody climbing vine. It attaches to support structures or trees and produces hanging spikes of berries after establishment. Regular vegetative growth supports consistent flowering and berry formation.

Nutritional Value
Black pepper contains antioxidants and essential oils, including piperine, which supports digestion and improves nutrient absorption. It also provides small amounts of vitamins and minerals.
