String of Hooks

The String of Hooks is a fast-growing trailing succulent widely cultivated in Kenya as an ornamental hanging and container plant. It originates from South Africa, yet it adapts very well to warm Kenyan conditions. In addition, growers value it for its unique curved foliage, rapid growth, and strong performance in low-maintenance gardens.

The plant produces long, flexible stems covered with glossy green leaves. These leaves curve into hook-like or banana-shaped forms. As a result, the plant forms cascading vines that can trail over 2 metres long under good conditions. The foliage stores water efficiently, which allows the plant to survive long dry periods.

In bright light, the leaves stay compact and vibrant green. However, in lower light, the stems stretch and lose density. Mature plants may also produce small white to pale lavender flowers. These flowers appear in clusters and release a light cinnamon-like fragrance.

Growing Conditions and Cultivation

The String of Hooks grows best in bright, indirect sunlight. However, it can tolerate partial or full sun if growers introduce it gradually. In Kenya, it performs well on balconies, patios, and sunny indoor windowsills.

The plant requires a very well-drained growing medium. A cactus or succulent mix works best. Growers should also add sand, pumice, or perlite to improve drainage. This step is important because heavy soils quickly lead to root rot.

Watering should remain minimal. The plant stores water in its leaves and survives drought easily. Therefore, growers should only water when the soil dries completely. In most Kenyan environments, watering every 1–2 weeks is enough. During cooler months, growers should reduce watering further. Overwatering remains the main cause of plant failure.

Propagation

Growers cut healthy stems and allow them to dry for a few days. After callusing, they place the cuttings on dry or slightly moist soil. Roots form quickly under warm conditions. In addition, nodes along trailing stems often root naturally when they touch soil.

Ornamental Uses and Value

In Kenya, String of Hooks is highly valued in ornamental horticulture for its trailing form and decorative foliage. Growers commonly use it in hanging baskets, wall planters, and elevated containers where the vines can cascade freely. Moreover, it creates strong visual impact when paired with upright succulents or mixed succulent arrangements.

It also performs well in modern indoor décor due to its sculptural shape and low maintenance needs. As a result, nurseries and plant sellers frequently stock it as a premium trailing succulent. Overall, its adaptability, fast growth, and unique leaf form make it one of the most popular “string” succulents in Kenyan ornamental plant production.
