PLANT

Soybean is a high-protein oilseed crop grown for both human consumption and livestock feed processing. It plays an important role in improving soil fertility because it fixes nitrogen naturally, making it valuable in crop rotation systems. In Kenya, soybean performs well in Western Kenya, parts of the Rift Valley, Central Kenya, and selected mid-altitude zones with reliable rainfall. The crop grows as a compact bushy plant that produces pods containing several round seeds. Demand continues to expand from animal feed manufacturers, edible oil processors, and emerging plant-based food markets.

Varieties
Common soybean varieties grown locally include SB19, SB24, and several TGX-series selections. Early-maturing types suit areas with shorter rainfall seasons, while medium-maturing varieties usually deliver stronger yields where moisture remains adequate. Improved varieties often show better disease tolerance and more uniform pod formation. Farmers typically select varieties based on rainfall patterns, maturity period, and the intended market channel.

Growing Conditions
Soybean grows best in warm conditions between 20–30 °C with rainfall ranging from 500–1,000 mm. The crop performs well in fertile, well-drained loamy soils with moderate organic matter and a pH of 5.5–7.0. Adequate sunlight supports strong vegetative growth and pod development. Good drainage remains essential because excess moisture can reduce root performance and lower yields.

Growth Cycle
Plants establish quickly from seed and form branching stems with trifoliate leaves. Flowering begins mid-season and leads to pod formation along the stems. Harvesting takes place once pods dry naturally and seeds reach safe storage moisture levels.

Nutritional Value
Soybean seeds provide high-quality plant protein, healthy oils, fibre, calcium, and iron. These nutrients support balanced diets and strengthen food security initiatives.

Uses & Market Potential
Soybeans support cooking oil extraction, livestock feed production, and processing into soy flour, beverages, and textured protein products. Expanding demand for affordable protein sources continues to create strong opportunities for farmers entering structured oilseed value chains.
