Snake Plant
The Snake Plant, locally known as “Ndaweya” in Kenya, is a highly resilient evergreen houseplant. It originates from West Africa but now grows widely in tropical and subtropical regions. In Kenya, growers value it for its strong architectural form, low maintenance needs, and ability to tolerate neglect. As a result, it is commonly found in homes, offices, and commercial interiors across Nairobi and other urban areas.
The plant produces stiff, upright, sword-shaped leaves that grow directly from a rhizome. These leaves are thick and fleshy, so they store water during dry periods. They often display green banding with grey-green patterns, while some varieties show yellow margins. In bright light, the foliage becomes more vibrant and upright. However, in low light, growth slows even though the plant continues to survive.
Growing Conditions and Cultivation
This plant adapts well to many environments. It thrives in bright, indirect light, and it also survives in shaded corners. Additionally, it tolerates varying indoor humidity, which increases its usefulness as an indoor plant.
It grows best at temperatures between 15–27°C and does not tolerate frost or prolonged cold. Under stable conditions, it spreads slowly but steadily through its rhizomes.
Well-draining soil is essential. Cactus or succulent mixes work best because excess moisture quickly causes root rot. Therefore, growers should always let the soil dry completely before watering again. In most Kenyan indoor environments, watering once every 1–2 weeks is enough, depending on temperature and airflow.
Propagation
Propagation is done through division or leaf cuttings. Division works faster because each section already has roots. Leaf cuttings take longer, but they still produce new plants with proper care. In both methods, growers should avoid overwatering, since young plants are sensitive to excess moisture.
Ornamental Uses and Value
The Snake Plant is widely known for its air-purifying ability. It removes indoor pollutants such as formaldehyde and benzene from the air. In addition, it releases oxygen at night, which makes it especially suitable for bedrooms. As a result, many households use it as both a decorative and functional plant.
Overall, Snake Plant remains one of the most reliable ornamental plants in Kenya. It combines durability, strong visual appeal, and environmental benefits, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced growers.
