PLANT

Rhipsalis

Rhipsalis is a trailing epiphytic cactus grown in Kenya as an ornamental hanging plant. It is the only cactus species naturally occurring in parts of Africa, including Kenya. Farmers and growers value it because it produces soft, spineless stems that create a cascading, jungle-like appearance in hanging pots and shaded gardens.

The plant naturally grows on trees and rocks in humid forest environments instead of soil. Because of this epiphytic adaptation, it performs best in shaded conditions and requires a loose, well-aerated growing medium.

Rhipsalis produces long, slender green stems that trail downward. In mature plants, these stems can reach 1–4 metres depending on growing conditions. Unlike most cacti, it has no spines, which makes it suitable for indoor use and handling. In favourable conditions, it produces small white flowers followed by berry-like fruits that may turn white, red, or pink depending on the species.

Growing Conditions and Cultivation

In Kenya, the plant grows well under warm conditions and performs best in dappled or partial shade. However, direct sunlight damages the stems and causes yellowing or dehydration. For this reason, growers place it indoors, under shade nets, or beneath trees in outdoor systems.

The crop requires a loose, well-drained potting mix enriched with organic matter. Growers improve aeration by mixing cactus soil with perlite or bark. As a result, the roots receive enough airflow and avoid excess moisture. Heavy soils, however, increase the risk of root rot and reduce plant performance.

Watering should remain moderate and controlled. Growers water only after the top layer of soil dries slightly. In addition, they reduce watering during cooler months to match slower plant growth. Overwatering remains the main production risk for this crop.

Propagation

Propagation mainly relies on stem cuttings. Growers cut healthy segments, allow them to dry briefly, and then plant them in a light rooting medium under warm conditions. Roots develop within a few weeks, making propagation efficient for nursery multiplication.

Ornamental Uses and Value

Rhipsalis serves mainly as an ornamental plant in Kenya. It is widely used in hanging baskets, indoor decoration, and shaded landscapes where its cascading stems create a soft tropical effect. Demand continues to rise in urban nurseries due to its low maintenance requirements and unique growth habit.
