Macadamia

Macadamia is a high-value nut crop grown for its creamy, nutrient-rich kernels used in snacks, confectionery, and gourmet foods. It is valued for its long production life, strong export demand, and high farm-gate returns. In Kenya, macadamia performs well in cool highland regions such as Murang’a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and parts of the Rift Valley. The tree grows into a perennial orchard crop that begins bearing nuts after a few years and produces consistently once mature. Strong international demand continues to support its expansion as a commercial cash crop.

Varieties
Common varieties include M. integrifolia types such as Beaumont and Nelmac II, and hybrid selections developed for higher yield and uniform nut size. Beaumont is widely planted due to its consistent production, while Nelmac II offers good kernel recovery and strong performance under suitable conditions. Farmers select varieties based on altitude, yield potential, and processor requirements.

Growing Conditions
Macadamia grows best in temperatures between 16–25 °C with well-distributed rainfall of 1,000–2,000 mm. The crop thrives in deep, well-drained, fertile soils rich in organic matter with a pH of 5.0–6.5. Good sunlight supports flowering and nut development, while water stress during flowering and nut filling reduces yield and kernel quality.

Growth Cycle
Trees establish from grafted seedlings and develop into tall, evergreen orchards. Flowering leads to nut formation, which matures over several months before falling for collection. Harvesting involves regular picking of fallen mature nuts, followed by drying and cracking for kernel extraction.

Nutritional Value
Macadamia nuts contain healthy monounsaturated fats, fibre, protein, vitamin B1, magnesium, and antioxidants. These nutrients support heart health, energy balance, and overall wellness.

Uses & Market Potential
Macadamia is used in snacks, confectionery, bakery products, and high-value edible oil production. It also serves strong export markets, particularly in Europe and Asia. Rising global demand continues to create attractive long-term opportunities for orchard expansion and value addition.
