French Beans

French beans are a premium vegetable crop grown for their slender, tender pods that are harvested young before seeds develop. They are widely used in fresh cooking, salads, and export-grade vegetable packs. In Kenya, production concentrates in cool and well-irrigated zones such as Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nakuru, Meru, and parts of the Rift Valley. The crop fits well into intensive farming systems because it grows fast and allows frequent harvesting over a short cycle. Demand remains strong from supermarkets, hotels, and export markets where quality and uniformity determine pricing.

Varieties
Production commonly relies on varieties such as Amy, Samantha, Teresa, and other improved hybrids. Amy is widely preferred for export due to its fine pods and consistent grading. Samantha and Teresa perform well under diverse conditions and support steady yields for local and regional markets. Hybrid selections stand out for synchronized maturity, straight pods, and improved resistance to common bean diseases. Farmers often choose varieties based on buyer specifications rather than general adaptability alone.

Growing Conditions
French beans perform best under mild temperatures ranging from 14–24 °C. They require well-distributed rainfall or irrigation, especially during flowering and pod development. Deep, well-drained loamy soils with good organic matter support strong root development and pod quality. Excess nitrogen tends to encourage leafy growth at the expense of pod formation, so balanced fertility management is essential. Consistent soil moisture improves pod smoothness and prevents deformation.

Growth Cycle
The crop establishes quickly from seed and moves into flowering within a few weeks. Pod formation follows shortly after, with harvesting beginning while pods remain young and tender. Regular picking improves yield by stimulating continued flowering and extending the productive phase.

Nutritional Value
French beans provide dietary fibre, vitamins A, C, and K, folate, and plant-based iron. These nutrients support immune function, digestive health, and overall metabolic balance.

Uses & Market Potential
French beans are processed for fresh markets, export chains, and ready-to-cook vegetable packs. Their strict quality standards create strong opportunities for disciplined production systems and value addition through grading and packaging.
