Carpet Sedum

Carpet Sedum is a fast-growing succulent grown in Kenya as an ornamental ground cover and container plant. It originates from eastern Asia, especially China and Japan, where it grows naturally in rocky and well-drained environments. In Kenya, growers value it for its dense mat-forming habit, fine-textured foliage, and strong tolerance to drought and heat. As a result, it has become popular for rock gardens, hanging baskets, border planting, and modern low-maintenance landscapes.

Plant Characteristics
The plant forms a low-growing carpet of slender, needle-like succulent leaves arranged in whorls along trailing stems. Its stems spread quickly and root at the nodes, allowing the plant to create a thick ground cover. Mature plants usually reach 10–15 cm in height and spread up to 60 cm or more. The foliage appears bright green, while variegated forms display cream or white leaf margins. Additionally, the plant produces clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers during late spring and early summer, which increase its ornamental appeal and attract pollinators.

Growing Conditions
Carpet Sedum performs best in full sun to partial shade. Bright sunlight encourages compact, dense growth and stronger foliage colour. However, too much shade causes leggy stems and weaker growth. It grows well in warm Kenyan conditions and tolerates drought once established. Furthermore, it adapts to shallow soils and thrives in areas with good airflow.

Soil and Water Requirements
The plant prefers sandy or gravelly soil with excellent drainage. Growers often improve potting mixes with coarse sand, pumice, or perlite to increase aeration. Heavy soils encourage root rot and reduce plant health. Therefore, watering should remain moderate. Allow the soil to dry slightly between watering sessions. Once established, the plant survives extended dry periods with little maintenance.

Propagation
Growers propagate Carpet Sedum easily through stem cuttings, division, or layering. Healthy cuttings root quickly when placed on moist, well-drained media. Consequently, nurseries produce large numbers of plants with minimal effort.

In Kenya, Carpet Sedum works well in containers, hanging baskets, rock gardens, walkways, and slope stabilization. Moreover, its drought tolerance and spreading growth make it ideal for xeriscaping and urban landscaping.
