Canola

Canola is an oilseed crop grown for its low-erucic-acid seeds used to produce high-quality edible cooking oil and livestock feed products. It is valued for its healthy oil profile, short growing cycle, and suitability for mechanised production systems. In Kenya, canola performs best in cool highland regions such as parts of the Rift Valley, Central Kenya, and Western Kenya, where moderate temperatures support strong flowering and seed formation. The crop produces small, round seeds harvested for oil extraction and processed meal. Rising demand for healthier vegetable oils continues to strengthen their production potential.

Varieties
Common canola types include open-pollinated varieties and hybrid canola selections developed for higher yield and improved oil content. Hybrid varieties often produce uniform maturity and stronger field performance under favourable conditions. Some improved lines also offer better tolerance to common pests and diseases. Variety choice usually depends on altitude, rainfall levels, and intended processing markets.

Growing Conditions
Canola grows well in cool temperatures between 10–25 °C with moderate rainfall ranging from 500–900 mm. The crop performs best in fertile, well-drained loamy soils with good organic matter and a pH of 5.5–7.5. Adequate sunlight supports strong flowering and pod formation. Excess moisture during maturity can reduce seed quality and increase disease pressure.

Growth Cycle
Plants establish quickly from seed and form leafy rosettes before stem elongation begins. Bright yellow flowers appear during the reproductive stage and later develop into slender pods containing small oil-rich seeds. Harvesting takes place once the pods dry and the seeds reach full maturity.

Nutritional Value
Canola seeds produce oil rich in unsaturated fats, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The processed meal also provides protein used in livestock feed production.
