Mutahi Kagwe
Mutahi Kagwe is the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, appointed in January 2025. He has extensive experience in public service, having previously served as Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary, Member of Parliament for Mukurwe-ini, and Senator for Nyeri County. This experience gives him a deep understanding of policy, governance, and sector reforms.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Insurance from the University of Nairobi and an MBA from the United States International University (USIU). His education, combined with his leadership experience, informs his approach to agricultural development, policy-making, and stakeholder engagement.
As Agriculture CS, Kagwe focuses on modernizing Kenya’s agricultural sector. He promotes technology adoption, youth involvement, and value chain improvements. In addition, he supports fintech solutions and market access programs to increase productivity and profitability for farmers. Under his guidance, the Ministry prioritizes food security, livestock health, and sustainable farming aligned with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
Kagwe also encourages inclusive policymaking. He collaborates with private sector partners, research institutions, and development organizations to strengthen Kenya’s agricultural ecosystem. His vision is to position agriculture as a high-impact sector that drives economic growth, creates jobs, and improves rural livelihoods.
