Alice Ruhweza

Alice Ruhweza is the President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). She leads efforts to support sustainable agricultural transformation across Africa. Overall, she brings nearly 30 years of experience in development, conservation, and food systems leadership.

Before joining AGRA, Alice served as Regional Director for Africa at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). In that role, she guided environmental and sustainability programmes across several African countries. At the same time, she worked to align conservation goals with economic growth and livelihoods. As a result, she built strong partnerships with governments, civil society, and the private sector.

Earlier in her career, Alice held senior leadership roles at Conservation International. Notably, she served as Executive Director of the Vital Signs Programme. She later became Interim Vice President for Sustainable Production. During this period, she promoted data-driven decision-making. In addition, she supported more sustainable practices in agriculture, mining, and energy.

Alice also worked at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). There, she led the Global Environment Finance Unit for Africa. In this position, she helped mobilize more than USD 600 million. Consequently, this funding supported climate-smart agriculture and environmental initiatives in over 40 countries across sub-Saharan Africa.

Alice holds a Master’s degree in Agricultural and Applied Economics from the University of Wisconsin. She also earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences from Makerere University. Today, at AGRA, she focuses on improving productivity, building resilience, and protecting the environment.
