Wambugu Apple Farm
Wambugu Apples Limited is a Kenyan horticultural enterprise that develops and distributes fruit seedlings suited to tropical growing conditions. The company was founded by Peter Wambugu, an agricultural innovator who developed the Wambugu Apple variety. This apple variety grows well in warm climates where conventional apples struggle to perform. The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) recognizes the variety for its adaptability and productivity. Wambugu Apple trees mature quickly and begin fruiting within nine to eleven months. Under good management, a mature tree can produce up to 500 fruits each year.
The company operates from Laikipia and supplies certified Wambugu Apple seedlings to farmers across Kenya. It also distributes planting materials to growers in other parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. These seedlings support farmers who want to establish orchards in regions with tropical or subtropical climates. Many smallholder farmers, schools, and commercial orchards use the seedlings to diversify fruit production.
Wambugu Apples has expanded its nursery portfolio to include grapes, dragon fruit, peaches, apricots, nectarines, and other fruit crops suited to local conditions. The company also produces freeze-dried fruits such as apples, mangoes, bananas, strawberries, and dragon fruit. Freeze-drying extends shelf life and reduces post-harvest losses while preserving nutritional value.
The enterprise promotes orchard development by supplying planting materials and sharing practical knowledge on orchard management. The second generation of the Wambugu family now manages the company and continues to expand seedling distribution, fruit production, and value addition activities.
