University of Nairobi is Kenya’s flagship public university, established by an Act of Parliament Cap 210 of the Laws of Kenya and located in Nairobi, with seven campuses and extra-mural centres that facilitate access to learning. The University responded to national, regional, and Africa-wide manpower needs by developing strong, diversified programmes across sciences, applied sciences, technology, humanities, social sciences, and the arts, currently offering approximately 200 programmes to a student population exceeding 38,000. The University prides itself on highly qualified academic staff, robust research output, and extensive international collaborations, with over 1,350 partnerships and more than 800 student/faculty exchange opportunities.
The Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Nairobi trains students in crop and livestock production, agribusiness, food science, human nutrition, land resource management, and environmental conservation. Programmes include undergraduate degrees such as BSc Agribusiness Management, BSc Agriculture, and BSc Food Science and Technology; masters programmes like MSc Agronomy, MSc Crop Protection, and MSc Food Science and Technology; and PhD programmes including Agricultural and Applied Economics, Agronomy, Plant Breeding and Biotechnology, and Food Science & Technology. The Faculty emphasizes practical training, research, extension services, and community engagement, equipping graduates to enhance productivity, implement climate-smart practices, and strengthen rural livelihoods.
Research within the Faculty focuses on integrated pest management, livestock productivity, soil fertility, post-harvest technologies, and agribusiness innovation. Through partnerships with farmers, cooperatives, NGOs, and government agencies, research outputs are translated into actionable strategies that improve food security, sustainability, and economic growth. The Faculty’s mission is to maintain a leadership role in teaching, research, outreach, and consultancy in agricultural and related sciences, guided by core values of care, inclusivity, freedom of thought, and innovativeness.
