University of Eldoret
The University of Eldoret (UoE), located approximately nine kilometres from Eldoret town along the Eldoret-Ziwa road, is a premier public university established in 1946. Originally founded as a Large Scale Farmers Training Centre, it evolved through several stages becoming Moi Teachers’ Training College in 1984, Chepkoilel Campus under Moi University in 1990, and finally receiving its charter as the University of Eldoret in 2013. UoE is a science, technology, and agriculture-focused institution with nine schools, 34 academic departments, and a student population exceeding 14,000.
The School of Agriculture and Biotechnology (SAGR) is a leading hub for agricultural education, research, and innovation in Kenya. The school offers a comprehensive range of programs, including short courses, certificates, diplomas, undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Its six departments: Seed, Crop and Horticultural Sciences, Animal Science, Family and Consumer Sciences, Soil Science, Biotechnology, and Agricultural Economics & Rural Development, deliver competitive, market-oriented programs aligned with evolving agricultural demands.
SAGR is distinguished by its cutting-edge research and extension services, facilitated through collaborations with government agencies, NGOs, private sector partners, and other universities. Projects such as the UoE–EABL Collaborative Barley Research and initiatives in sweet potato-soybean integration, indigenous chicken feed evaluation, and groundnut improvement underscore its commitment to applied agricultural innovation. The school also emphasizes student research, experiential learning, and community capacity building through workshops, exhibitions, and field projects.
With its robust academic culture, state-of-the-art facilities, and dynamic faculty, the School of Agriculture and Biotechnology equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and entrepreneurial capabilities to drive Kenya’s agricultural development.
