Tambuzi Ltd
Tambuzi Ltd is a leading Kenyan horticultural enterprise specializing in traditional garden-scented roses and summer flowers. Founded in the mid-1990s by Tim and Maggie Hobbs, the company transformed a 64-hectare derelict farm on the foothills of Mount Kenya into a model of sustainable floriculture. Over time, Tambuzi expanded to three farms across Burguret and Timau, covering 25 hectares of roses while integrating forestry, beekeeping, and livestock operations.
Located at 1,900 meters above sea level, near the Equator, the farms benefit from ten hours of daily sunshine and 800 mm of rainfall annually. These conditions support vibrant and resilient crops. Tambuzi employs over 400 full-time staff, 80% of whom live locally, indirectly supporting more than 2,400 dependents. The company prioritizes employee welfare, job security, and career development.
Tambuzi actively promotes sustainability through integrated pest management, soil health improvement, water conservation, and renewable energy. Initiatives include a 6-hectare rainwater-fed dam, solar-powered operations, greywater wetlands, reforestation, and beekeeping programs. In addition, the company partners with schools, local institutions, and the Waitrose Foundation to improve education, health, and livelihoods.
Certified under the Kenya Flower Council Gold standard and Fair Flowers Fair Plants (FFP), Tambuzi combines high-quality production with ethical and environmentally responsible practices. Its philosophy emphasizes shared value, strengthening communities while building a thriving, resilient, and sustainable agricultural enterprise in Kenya.
