South Eastern Kenya University
South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) is a public university located in Kitui County, Kenya. It is the successor to the South Eastern University College (SEUCO), a Constituent College of the University of Nairobi, and became a fully-fledged university in 2008. Since its inception, SEKU has grown steadily, currently hosting approximately 8,000 students across certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programmes. The University is committed to producing well-rounded graduates with practical knowledge and research skills, supported by highly qualified teaching staff, most of whom hold PhDs and have extensive experience in teaching and research. SEKU’s mission is to provide quality education through research, teaching, extension, innovation, and entrepreneurship, with emphasis on food and nutrition security, health, engineering and technology, environment, and natural resources management for sustainable development, while its vision is to become a globally competitive Centre of Excellence in research, teaching and learning, community service, innovation, and commercialization. The main campus is in Kitui Town, with additional campuses in Wote, Mtito Andei, and Migwani.
The School of Agriculture, Environment, Water and Natural Resources Management was established in 2018 following the merger of the former School of Environment and Natural Resources Management, the School of Water Resources, Science and Technology, and the Institute of Mining and Mineral Processing. The School consists of three departments: Department of Environmental Science and Land Resources Management, Department of Hydrology and Aquatic Sciences, and Department of Geology and Meteorology. It offers PhD, MSc, and BSc programmes, engages in research collaborations with local and international institutions, and contributes to the rational management and sustainable use of water and natural resources in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands. The School plays a key role in community outreach, training, and research, addressing national and regional challenges in agriculture, environment, and resource management.
