Sosian Ranch
Sosian Ranch is one of Laikipia’s longstanding mixed beef and dairy operations, renowned for its large, registered herd of pure Boran cattle. Located in a challenging semi-arid ecosystem, the ranch manages approximately 2,200 head of cattle, including 680 breeding cows and 30 stud bulls registered with the Kenya Stud Book. This makes Sosian one of the largest pure Boran herds in Kenya and globally. The ranch supplies high-quality breeding stock to other producers and markets premium free-range, grass-fed beef to top restaurants in Nairobi.
The Boran, a breed developed in Kenya from hardy indigenous stock, thrives in Laikipia’s drought-prone environment. Sosian’s breeding program focuses on temperament, maternal traits, structural soundness and carcass quality. Each animal undergoes inspection under the Boran Cattle Breeders Society, and all calves are tagged and recorded shortly after birth. The ranch operates five breeding herds at any given time, ensuring accurate sire identification and structured herd management.
Sosian integrates cattle production with environmental stewardship. Being deliberately understocked, the ranch uses livestock grazing to maintain short, nutritious grass that attracts wildlife and supports biodiversity. Movable night bomas enrich the soil with manure, creating fertile patches and wildlife hotspots. This coexistence model ensures that cattle, wildlife and rangeland health reinforce one another.
Despite challenges such as drought, predation and tick-borne diseases, Sosian maintains strong productivity through vigilant herd supervision, regular dipping and year-round water management. Herders play a crucial role, providing round-the-clock care and deep stock knowledge that supports both animal welfare and breeding success.
