SokoFresh

SokoFresh is a Kenyan agritech enterprise dedicated to reducing post-harvest losses and improving market access for smallholder farmers. Founded in 2019, the company focuses on high-value, perishable crops such as avocados, mangoes, bananas, French beans, and soybeans. SokoFresh addresses the challenge of spoilage by providing solar-powered cold storage and aggregation solutions directly at the farm or village level. This “first-mile” infrastructure allows farmers to preserve the quality of their produce while consolidating volumes for market-ready delivery.

The company also facilitates market linkages, connecting farmers to domestic and export buyers. By managing logistics, quality control, and payments, SokoFresh enables farmers to sell at premium prices and reduces dependence on informal brokers. On average, farmers working with SokoFresh experience up to 20% higher earnings per kilogram and reduce post-harvest losses from 40–50% down to less than 10%.

SokoFresh’s approach is climate-conscious and socially impactful. The use of solar-powered storage minimizes energy consumption, while the company’s operations contribute to reducing food waste a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, SokoFresh promotes inclusivity and gender equity, empowering women and youth to participate actively in the value chain.

The company’s innovative model has garnered recognition, including the 2024 iF Social Impact Prize for Food-Loss Reduction and Gender Inclusivity. By combining technology, market facilitation, and sustainable practices, SokoFresh is transforming Kenya’s agrifood sector, enabling smallholder farmers to preserve their harvests, increase income, and access fair and reliable markets.
