Seed Trade Association of Kenya
The Seed Trade Association of Kenya (STAK) represents Kenya’s formal seed industry. Leaders in the sector formed STAK in 1982 under the Societies Act (Cap 108) to promote structured seed trade and defend the interests of seed companies. In 1999, the association set up an independent Secretariat to manage daily operations and strengthen member services.
STAK brings together seed companies registered by the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS). These companies produce, process, and market certified seed across Kenya. The association also includes organizations that support agriculture through research, logistics, and technical services. As a result, STAK provides a strong platform for dialogue, advocacy, and industry coordination.
The association aims to build a competitive seed industry that supports food security. It helps members grow their businesses while contributing to national and regional food supply. In addition, STAK shares information, engages policymakers, and promotes high industry standards.
STAK operates on clear values. Members promote mutual respect in their work and partnerships. They handle information with integrity and protect confidentiality. Furthermore, they apply professional expertise in all activities and pursue their mandate with passion and commitment.
Today, STAK represents more than 50 registered and accredited companies in Kenya’s seed sector. Through active advocacy and member support, the association continues to strengthen seed systems and improve agricultural productivity.
