Rongo University
Rongo University (RU), located in Rongo Sub-County, Migori County, Kenya, is a public institution that traces its roots to the 1970s, when it began as Kitere Technical School. Over the decades, the institution evolved through Moi Institute of Technology (1983) and Rongo University College (2012), before being granted a full charter on 7th October 2016. Strategically located in a high-agricultural-potential area near Kitere Hills, the university leverages its environment to provide practical learning, research, and extension opportunities in agriculture.
The School of Science, Agriculture, and Environmental Studies forms the cornerstone of RU’s commitment to agricultural development. It offers undergraduate, diploma, and postgraduate programs across crop science, animal production, environmental management, and agribusiness. Students engage in hands-on learning through experimental farms, laboratories, and field-based projects, integrating modern technologies, ICT applications, and climate-smart practices to enhance productivity and sustainability.
Research and community engagement are central to the School’s mandate. Faculty and students collaborate with government agencies, NGOs, and private-sector partners to address challenges in smallholder farming, value chain development, natural resource management, and food security. Initiatives include outreach programs, technology transfer, and capacity-building for farmers and agribusiness entrepreneurs.
By combining high-quality education, applied research, and stakeholder partnerships, Rongo University equips graduates with the technical expertise, entrepreneurial skills, and leadership capacity to drive innovation, sustainability, and resilience in Kenya’s agricultural sector. Its programs are designed to empower communities, enhance livelihoods, and contribute meaningfully to national and regional food security and agribusiness development.
