Pest Control Products Board (PCPB)
The Pest Control Products Board (PCPB) is a statutory organization of the Government of Kenya, established under the Pest Control Products Act, Cap 346 of 1982. The Board is mandated to regulate the importation, exportation, manufacture, distribution, sale, and safe use of pest control products in Kenya, ensuring environmental protection, human safety, and agricultural productivity. As the national regulatory authority for pesticides, PCPB oversees registration, quality assurance, compliance monitoring, and enforcement of standards across the pest control products value chain.
PCPB’s vision is to be a world-class regulatory agency for pest control products, while its mission is to provide efficient and effective regulation, mitigating potential harmful effects to humans, animals, plants, and the environment. The Board focuses on facilitating safe and effective pesticide use, promoting compliance with national and international standards, and supporting sustainable agricultural and environmental practices. Strategic objectives include improving inspection services, developing human resource capacity, enabling access to safe and effective pesticides, reducing environmental contamination, and reviewing regulatory frameworks to address emerging challenges such as disposal of obsolete chemicals.
Operationally, PCPB emphasizes public awareness, training, enforcement, and stakeholder engagement. It regulates the handling and distribution of restricted products, monitors pesticide quality in the market, and ensures adherence to international conventions including Rotterdam, Basel, and Stockholm. The Board also maintains inventories of obsolete chemicals, promotes proper disposal practices, and enforces correct labeling to safeguard public and environmental health. Through these functions, PCPB contributes to safe pesticide management, sustainable agricultural production, and protection of ecosystems, reinforcing Kenya’s commitment to responsible pest control practices.
