Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM)

Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Kenya is a national network of civil society organizations that promote agroecology and sustainable agriculture. It is part of the wider PELUM Association, which operates across East, Central, and Southern Africa. In Kenya, the network brings together over 60 member organizations working with smallholder farmers and pastoralist communities across all 47 counties.

The organization focuses on practical and community-driven agricultural solutions. For instance, it promotes organic farming, agroforestry, conservation agriculture, and regenerative practices. In addition, it strengthens the capacity of its members through training, partnerships, and knowledge sharing. As a result, farmers improve productivity while protecting soil health and biodiversity.

PELUM Kenya also plays a key role in advocacy and policy engagement. It works closely with government institutions and stakeholders to promote policies that support agroecology and sustainable food systems. Moreover, the network supports agro-enterprise development and market access. These efforts enable farmers to increase their incomes and improve their livelihoods.

The organization further addresses climate change by promoting resilient farming practices. It encourages soil and water conservation, sustainable land use, and the use of indigenous seeds. At the same time, it supports natural resource management to protect ecosystems and strengthen community resilience.

Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Kenya also prioritizes inclusion by empowering women and youth. Through collaboration, innovation, and strong partnerships, the organization continues to build resilient food systems and sustainable rural development across Kenya.
