Nuru International
Nuru International is a global non-profit organisation focused on ending extreme poverty in fragile and conflict-affected rural communities. Founded in 2008, Nuru International works by building locally led organisations that empower smallholder farmers to transition from subsistence farming to sustainable agribusiness. Its approach focuses on long-term resilience, economic growth, and community-driven development.
The organisation operates across several African countries, including Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, and Burkina Faso. These regions often face overlapping challenges such as poverty, climate change, and insecurity. Therefore, Nuru International prioritises building resilience in communities that other organisations may find difficult to reach.
Nuru International’s model centres on creating farmer-owned agribusiness cooperatives. These cooperatives provide training, access to inputs, and reliable market linkages. As a result, farmers increase productivity, diversify crops, and improve incomes. In addition, the organisation promotes climate-smart agriculture, helping communities adapt to environmental changes while protecting natural resources.
A key strength of Nuru International is its focus on local leadership. Each country programme operates through locally led organisations that understand community needs. This approach ensures sustainability, ownership, and long-term impact. Moreover, the organisation places strong emphasis on women and youth, recognising their role in driving inclusive economic growth.
Through its integrated approach, Nuru International has supported hundreds of agribusinesses and reached hundreds of thousands of people. By combining innovation, partnerships, and community leadership, the organisation continues to transform rural livelihoods. Its work strengthens food systems, builds resilience, and creates pathways out of extreme poverty across Africa.
