National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI)
The National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) is Kenya’s top agency for regulating, coordinating, and promoting research, technology, and innovation. Its origins date to the early 1900s, with institutions like Scott Agricultural Laboratories (1903) and Coffee Research Services (1908). After independence, Kenya expanded its scientific institutions, creating the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) in 1977 to advise the government on science and technology.
In 2013, the Science, Technology and Innovation Act replaced NCST with NACOSTI to support Vision 2030 goals. NACOSTI ensures high-quality research and innovation while guiding government policy. It accredits research institutions, monitors standards, encourages private sector involvement, and coordinates national and county research initiatives. It also sponsors conferences, promotes science education, and shares knowledge to drive economic and social development.
NACOSTI envisions a dynamic science and innovation sector that fuels national growth. The agency prioritizes professionalism, integrity, teamwork, responsiveness, and fairness. By fostering research, skills development, and the practical application of science, NACOSTI helps Kenya become a knowledge-driven, globally competitive economy.
Additionally, NACOSTI supports inclusive development by enabling collaboration among researchers, institutions, and the private sector. Its work strengthens national development, boosts economic growth, and improves societal well-being. Through regulation, capacity building, and advisory services, NACOSTI ensures that science, technology, and innovation create real impact for Kenya today and into the future.
