Mwea Rice Growers Multipurpose Cooperative Society
Mwea Rice Growers Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd (MRGM) is a member-owned agricultural cooperative in Kenya that plays a major role in rice production, processing, and marketing. It began in 1964 when rice growers in the Mwea Irrigation Scheme formed a society to improve savings and access to credit. Over time, it evolved into a full-scope cooperative focused on supporting rice farmers and expanding value-chain services for its members.
MRGM’s operations cover the full rice value chain from crop production to processing and distribution. The cooperative sources rice directly from its member farmers, many of whom grow basmati and other varieties under irrigation in the fertile Mwea region in Kirinyaga County. It runs its own processing facilities and provides services such as mechanisation, farm inputs, and post-harvest support to maximise quality and reduce losses.
The cooperative manages services that include land preparation support, supply of certified seeds, transport, and other agronomic inputs on credit. Members repay through part of their harvested rice, which strengthens production continuity. MRGM also offers delivery services, operates its own transport vehicles, and prioritises the timely bulk supply of rice to customers.
MRGM products are recognised for quality and authenticity. The cooperative markets several rice grades, such as premium Kenya Select, Special Pishori, and Mwea Rice Growers Grade Two, which are popular with local households, wholesalers, and food service buyers. It holds licensing and certification that align with food safety and quality standards in Kenya.
Beyond rice, the society supports community development and cooperative sustainability. It invests in infrastructure such as garages, storage facilities, and modern drying and harvesting equipment. MRGM also engages in training and extension services to help farmers improve yields, increase productivity, and enhance livelihoods.
Today, MRGM continues to strengthen its role as a farmer-focused cooperative. By combining production support, active marketing, and quality processing, it contributes to Kenya’s food security and economic growth while supporting thousands of rice growers in the Mwea irrigation scheme and beyond.
