Mount Kenya University

Mount Kenya University (MKU) is a chartered private university located along General Kago Road, Thika, about 45 kilometres from Nairobi, Kenya. The university was founded in 1996 as the Thika Institute of Technology, evolving from a computer outreach and training program into a commercial college offering management, ICT, and paramedical programs. In 2006, the Commission for Higher Education authorized MKU to establish a full-fledged privately funded university. Today, MKU operates 16 campuses and marketing centres across Kenya and the East African region, with additional study centres in Rwanda, Uganda, Hargeisa, Burundi, and Puntland.

MKU is committed to broad-based, holistic, and inclusive education, emphasizing research, innovation, and practical skills. The university governance is overseen by a Board of Trustees, Senate, and University Management Board, ensuring high standards in teaching, research, and service delivery. MKU is ISO 9001:2015 certified and maintains over 50 local and international partnerships to support knowledge exchange and capacity building.

The university’s Department of Agriculture and Life Sciences trains students in modern agricultural practices, animal health, and biotechnology, equipping graduates with skills for employment, entrepreneurship, and research. MKU emphasizes hands-on learning, industry linkages, and innovative approaches to address contemporary agricultural challenges. Graduates are prepared to contribute to Kenya’s food security, sustainable development, and agribusiness sector.

MKU has been recognized by the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) as the SDG 9 Hub Chair for Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure from 2025–2027, reflecting its commitment to research, innovation, and community development in alignment with global sustainable development goals.
