Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD), established under Executive Order No. 1 of 2023, is tasked with creating an enabling environment for the sustainable development and management of crops and livestock to ensure Kenya’s food and nutrition security. The Ministry plays a pivotal role in the country’s economic and social development by promoting food security, rural livelihoods, employment, wealth creation, and foreign exchange earnings. It oversees two State Departments—Agriculture and Livestock Development—as well as Semi-Autonomous Government Agencies (SAGAs) and several agricultural training institutions.
MoALD’s mandate is to support sustainable agricultural practices and economic development, guiding the sector through policies, research, and resource allocation. Its vision is a food-secure and prosperous nation anchored on innovative, competitive, and commercially oriented agriculture and cooperative systems, while its mission is to create an enabling environment for sustainable food security, a strong cooperative sector, and improved livelihoods. Core values include professionalism, integrity, efficiency, responsiveness, partnerships, teamwork, customer focus, and inclusivity.
The Ministry drives policy formulation, regulation, and promotion across a range of agricultural and livestock activities. These include national food policy, crop and livestock development, agricultural financing, mechanization, research and development, seed and biosafety management, extension services, irrigation support, and capacity building for staff. Under its oversight, institutions such as the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB), Kenya Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Council (KENTTEC), Kenya Veterinary Vaccine Production Institute (KEVEVAPI), Kenya Dairy Board (KDB), and Kenya Seed Company implement targeted interventions to improve productivity, market access, value addition, and innovation.
Through integrated policy, research, and institutional support, MoALD strengthens Kenya’s agricultural and livestock sectors, ensuring resilience, economic growth, and food and nutrition security for all Kenyans.
