Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD), created under Executive Order No. 1 of 2023, promotes sustainable crop and livestock development in Kenya. It ensures food security, supports nutrition, and drives economic growth. The Ministry also improves rural livelihoods, creates jobs, and generates wealth. It oversees two State Departments—Agriculture and Livestock Development—alongside Semi-Autonomous Government Agencies (SAGAs) and agricultural training institutions.

MoALD provides policies, research support, and resources to strengthen sustainable agriculture. Its vision is a food-secure and prosperous Kenya powered by innovative and competitive agriculture. The Ministry’s mission is to create an enabling environment for food security, strong cooperatives, and better livelihoods. Its core values include professionalism, integrity, efficiency, responsiveness, partnerships, teamwork, customer focus, and inclusivity.

The Ministry drives policy, regulation, and promotion in several areas. These include national food policy, crop and livestock development, agricultural financing, mechanization, research and development, seed and biosafety management, extension services, irrigation support, and staff capacity building. Institutions under MoALD—such as KALRO, KVB, KENTTEC, KEVEVAPI, KDB, and Kenya Seed Company—deliver programs to improve productivity, market access, value addition, and innovation.

By combining policies, research, and institutional support, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development strengthens Kenya’s agriculture and livestock sectors. This ensures resilience, promotes economic growth, and enhances sustainable food and nutrition security for all Kenyans.
