Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), located in Kakamega County, is a leading public university in Kenya, established in 2007, with roots tracing back to 1972 under the Harambee spirit. The School of Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences and Technology (SAVET), established in 2011, addresses Kenya’s growing dependence on agriculture and agro-industrialization by training professionals equipped to enhance sustainable food and fibre production.

SAVET offers a comprehensive range of programs across crop science, soil science, animal production, agricultural economics, agribusiness, food science, and resource management. These span certificate, diploma, undergraduate, master’s, and PhD levels, integrating theoretical knowledge with applied learning and practical exposure. Programs such as BSc Agriculture and Biotechnology, BSc Agribusiness Management, MSc Animal Production, and PhD in Sustainable Agricultural Systems exemplify this breadth and depth.

Research is central to SAVET’s mission. Faculty and students engage in projects addressing climate change, food security, post-harvest losses, and sustainable resource management, often in collaboration with industry and international partners such as USAID, NACOSTI, and UNU. Extension services and community engagement ensure research translates into practical solutions, improving smallholder productivity, agribusiness efficiency, and regional food security.

SAVET emphasizes innovation, income generation, and modern agricultural techniques, preparing graduates to respond to socio-economic challenges and opportunities in Kenya’s agricultural sector. By combining high-quality training, applied research, and stakeholder collaboration, MMUST’s SAVET positions itself as a regional center of excellence, nurturing professionals capable of driving sustainable agricultural development, agro-industrial growth, and food security across Kenya and beyond.
