Maseno University
Maseno University, located on the Equator along the Kisumu–Busia Highway in Kisumu County, is a public institution established in 1991 and elevated to a full university in 2001. The university sits in a lush, serene environment conducive for learning, research, and innovation, and serves a student population of over 27,000 across its Main Campus, Kisumu City Campus, Odera Akang’o Campus, and eCampus.
The School of Agriculture and Food Security, established in 2012, is central to Maseno’s mandate of enhancing Kenya’s agricultural productivity. It comprises five departments: Applied Plant Sciences, Fisheries and Natural Resources, Animal Science, Soil Science, and Agricultural Economics and Rural Development, offering eight undergraduate programs that integrate ICT with practical agricultural training, including Agronomy, Horticulture, Animal Science, Fisheries, Agribusiness, and Agricultural Education and Extension.
Maseno University emphasizes applied research and innovation, leveraging its 200-acre farm, which serves teaching, research, and demonstration purposes. The farm, combined with the region’s diverse agroecological zones, provides students and researchers with hands-on exposure to crop and livestock production, soil management, and sustainable practices.
Through partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and agribusinesses, the university extends its research into community outreach, supporting smallholder farmers with training, demonstrations, and technology transfer initiatives. These programs strengthen value chains, enhance productivity, and contribute to regional food security.
With a commitment to high-quality, practical, and ICT-integrated education, Maseno University positions itself as a hub for agricultural excellence, preparing graduates to drive sustainable development and agribusiness innovation in Kenya and the wider Eastern African region.
