Laikipia University
Laikipia University (UoL), chartered in 2013 and located in Laikipia County, is a public institution with a rich history tracing back to 1929, when it was founded by William Thomas Alfred Levet. The institution evolved through several phases, including a Large-Scale Farmers Training College (1965–1970), Animal Husbandry and Industry Training Institute (1979), and a campus of Egerton University (1990–2010), before becoming a fully-fledged university. UoL is committed to delivering high-quality education, research, consultancy, and community service, guided by its vision to “Nurture and Transform for the World.”
The School of Agriculture at Laikipia University plays a central role in addressing Kenya’s agricultural development and food security challenges. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma programs in areas including crop science, animal production, agricultural economics, natural resource management, and climate-smart agriculture. The School integrates practical training, research, and field-based learning to equip students with the technical, entrepreneurial, and problem-solving skills necessary for sustainable agricultural development.
UoL emphasizes applied research and innovation, partnering with local communities, government agencies, and international institutions to develop solutions in climate adaptation, livestock productivity, agroecosystem management, and sustainable land use. Academic programs are enhanced through well-equipped laboratories, experimental farms, and hands-on training in emerging technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and spatial analysis.
Through high-quality education, research, and extension services, Laikipia University prepares graduates to become leaders, innovators, and practitioners capable of driving sustainable agriculture, natural resource management, and environmental stewardship across Kenya and the wider region.
