Kisii University

Kisii University traces its origins to Kisii University College, founded in 1965 as a Primary Teachers Training College on 61 acres of land donated by the County Council of Gusii. In 1983, it was upgraded to a Secondary Teachers College offering diploma programmes. In 1994, Egerton University took over the college as its campus, and in 1999, it introduced its first degree programme in Bachelor of Business and Management. On 23rd August 2007, Kisii University College was officially established as a constituent college of Egerton University through Government Legal Notice No. 163 of 2007. Following compliance with the Universities Act, 2012, Kisii University was awarded a charter on 6th February 2013 by former President Mwai Kibaki, officially becoming a fully-fledged public university.

Located in Kisii County, southwestern Kenya, the university sits in an agriculturally rich region with fertile soils, abundant rainfall, and farming communities engaged in crop and livestock production. This provides an ideal environment for practical training and applied research in agriculture and natural resource management.

The Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources Management (SANRM) trains undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma students in agricultural education, extension, natural resource management, and applied aquatic sciences. Students gain hands-on skills through laboratory work, farm-based practicals, and community engagement, preparing them for careers in government extension services, research institutions, agribusiness, agro-based industries, NGOs, and teaching.

The department emphasizes integrated training, innovation, and entrepreneurship, equipping graduates to respond to societal needs, support sustainable livelihoods, and contribute to Kenya’s agricultural development.
