Kibabii University
Kibabii University (KIBU), located in Bungoma County, has a rich history tracing back to pre-independence teacher-training initiatives by the Mill Hill Fathers in 1932. The institution evolved through various phases: Kibabii Teachers’ Training College, later becoming Kibabii University College in 2011 under Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, and attaining full university status in 2015. Today, KIBU is recognized for its commitment to high-quality education, research, and community engagement, particularly in agriculture and allied sciences.
The Department of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (AVS), within the Faculty of Science, is a leading center for agricultural education, research, and innovation in Western Kenya. The Department is supported by a dedicated team of ten academic and technical staff, including specialists in horticulture, veterinary science, animal production, agronomy, agricultural economics, soil science, and biotechnology.
The Department offers undergraduate programmes in Agriculture and Biotechnology, Agriculture Education and Extension, and Agricultural Economics & Resource Management, with PhD, Master’s, and Diploma programmes under development. Training combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on learning, emphasizing sustainable agriculture, biotechnology applications, natural-resource management, agribusiness, and extension services.
Graduates are equipped for diverse careers, including government and county agricultural services, research institutions, agro-based industries, international organizations, NGOs, food processing, and teaching. The Department fosters entrepreneurship, enabling graduates to leverage opportunities across the agricultural value chain, from production to value addition.
Through applied research, innovation, and active stakeholder engagement, the Department of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (AVS) at Kibabii University (KIBU) develops professionals ready to drive sustainable agricultural development, food security, and rural livelihoods in Kenya and the wider Eastern African region.
