Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA)

The Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA) is the national professional body representing veterinary surgeons in Kenya. It was founded in 1966 and formally registered in 1967 under the Societies Act, Cap 108 of the Laws of Kenya. The Association is headquartered in Kabete and serves veterinarians in both the public and private sectors. Today, KVA has a nationwide presence with over 2,500 members across 12 regional branches.

The Association’s mandate is to promote the welfare and economic empowerment of its members while safeguarding animal health, animal welfare, and public health. As a result, KVA acts as a key professional watchdog for veterinary practice in Kenya. It also provides leadership within the wider animal resources and livestock sector. Its work spans animal, human, and environmental health, therefore supporting a strong One Health approach.

In addition, KVA plays an active role in advocacy and policy engagement. It works closely with government institutions, regulators, industry players, and development partners. Through these efforts, the Association contributes to stronger animal health systems and improved service delivery. Meanwhile, it promotes continuous professional development, ethical standards, and knowledge sharing among veterinary professionals.

KVA is also linked to the global veterinary community. It is a member of the World Veterinary Association, the Commonwealth Veterinary Association, the Association of Professional Societies in East Africa, and the Kenya Healthcare Federation. These partnerships expand learning and cooperation.

Furthermore, KVA organizes scientific congresses, publishes professional journals, and conducts community outreach. Through these activities, it supports sustainable livestock production, food safety, and public health. Ultimately, KVA continues to strengthen veterinary practice and animal health in Kenya.
