Kenya Tea Development Agency(KTDA)
Kenya Tea Development Agency(KTDA) is a private company owned by about 600,000 smallholder tea farmers across 16 counties in Kenya. These farmers hold shares in 54 tea factory companies. Many factories have added 17 satellite units to process extra leaf, bringing the total to 71.
KTDA also owns nine subsidiary companies that support tea production. These include Chai Trading Company, Kenya Tea Packers, Majani Insurance Brokers, KTDA Power, Tea Machinery and Engineering, KTDA Foundation, Chai Logistics, KTDA Management Services, and Greenland Fedha. Each subsidiary provides services such as marketing, logistics, machinery, energy, insurance, and social programs that benefit farmers directly.
Smallholder tea farming began in 1957 with the first factory in Ragati, Nyeri. In 1960, the government established the Special Crops Development Authority. In 1964, KTDA took over management under the Agriculture Act. The company privatized in 2000 and became KTDA Holdings in 2009.
KTDA coordinates production, processing, and marketing for its farmers. It provides technical guidance, infrastructure, and support from its subsidiaries. Farmers receive advice on farm management, factory operations, and market access. KTDA ensures consistent quality and efficiency across all factories.
Through this structured approach, smallholder tea farmers can grow, process, and sell tea in an organized and commercially viable way. The company maintains a strong network linking rural farmers to modern tea production and reliable market systems.
