Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD)
The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) is the national authority responsible for providing accurate, timely, and reliable weather and climate services. Established to serve multiple sectors including agriculture, water resources, forestry, civil aviation, disaster risk reduction, and the private sector, KMD underpins national development, public safety, and environmental sustainability. Recognized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as Kenya’s sole authoritative source for severe weather and extreme climate information, KMD operates under Executive Orders of the Government of Kenya.
KMD monitors atmospheric conditions nationwide through an extensive network of weather stations, satellites, and data-analysis centres. It provides real-time forecasts, rainfall and temperature trend analyses, wind monitoring, and climate-risk assessments. These services enable farmers, transport operators, energy planners, and disaster-response teams to make informed decisions that protect lives, crops, and infrastructure.
The department collaborates closely with county governments, agricultural institutions, and research bodies to ensure that climate information is accessible and actionable. Seasonal forecasts help farmers plan planting schedules, select suitable crops, and mitigate losses from extreme weather events. KMD also invests in public education, training extension officers, holding community forums, and disseminating updates through mobile platforms to build climate awareness and resilience.
Guided by its mission to provide and facilitate weather and climate information for sustainable development, and its vision of delivering world-class weather and climate services, KMD strengthens national preparedness, supports food security, and helps communities adapt to changing climate patterns. Its integrated approach ensures that climate science informs practical decision-making across Kenya.
