Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD)

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) provides accurate, timely, and reliable weather and climate information. It serves multiple sectors, including agriculture, water resources, forestry, civil aviation, disaster management, and the private sector. KMD supports national development, public safety, and environmental sustainability. Recognized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), it is Kenya’s official source for severe weather warnings and climate data.

KMD monitors atmospheric conditions across the country using weather stations, satellites, and data analysis centres. It offers real-time forecasts, rainfall and temperature trends, wind monitoring, and climate-risk assessments. These services help farmers plan planting schedules, guide transport operators, and assist energy planners. Additionally, they support disaster-response teams in protecting lives and infrastructure.

The department collaborates with county governments, research institutions, and agricultural organizations to make climate information practical and actionable. Seasonal forecasts allow farmers to choose suitable crops, schedule irrigation, and reduce losses from extreme weather. KMD also educates the public through training for extension officers, community forums, and mobile updates. This outreach builds climate awareness and resilience among communities.

Guided by its mission to provide weather and climate information for sustainable development, and its vision of delivering world-class services, KMD strengthens preparedness, supports food security, and helps communities adapt to climate change. By combining science, technology, and outreach, the department ensures climate data informs practical decisions and promotes resilience across Kenya.
