Kenya Meat Commission(KMC)

The Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) was established in 1950 through an Act of Parliament to provide a ready market for livestock farmers and deliver high-quality meat products to consumers. It is the oldest and most experienced meat processor in Kenya and the broader East African region. After 15 years of closure, KMC reopened on 26th June 2006 to modernize Kenya’s meat industry, strengthen domestic supply, and expand export opportunities.

KMC operates fully integrated meat processing facilities capable of handling high volumes of beef, goat, and sheep meat. Its plants meet strict hygiene, food safety, and quality standards, ensuring products align with consumer preferences and international requirements. The commission manages the entire value chain, from livestock procurement and processing to packaging, marketing, and distribution.

The organization works closely with farmers, cooperatives, and livestock stakeholders to improve breeding, nutrition, and animal husbandry practices. These efforts boost livestock health, productivity, and incomes. KMC invests in research, value addition, cold chain logistics, and innovative meat preservation to reduce post-harvest losses.

KMC extends its reach through branded outlets and franchise partners nationwide, increasing access to premium meat products. The commission actively promotes Kenyan meat in international markets, reinforcing export growth and the country’s reputation in the livestock sector.

Guided by a vision to be a world-class meat processor and a mission to support national food security, livelihoods, and sustainable growth, KMC continues to innovate, improve efficiency, and maintain high-quality standards. By combining large-scale processing, research, and market engagement, KMC remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s agricultural economy.
