Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI)
The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) is a national research institution established in 1979 under the Science and Technology Act and recognized under the Science, Technology and Innovation Act, 2013. KMFRI leads research in marine and freshwater fisheries in Kenya. The institute develops solutions to improve fish production, fish farming, and sustainable aquaculture, while conserving aquatic ecosystems and supporting the livelihoods of fishing communities.
KMFRI studies fish breeding, aquaculture techniques, water quality, and fisheries management. It creates new fish species, improves feeding practices, and implements disease prevention methods to increase productivity. The institute monitors lakes, rivers, and coastal areas to promote sustainable fishing, responsible aquaculture, and biodiversity protection. These activities help maintain healthy fish stocks and productive aquatic ecosystems.
The institute provides training and knowledge transfer to fish farmers, aquaculture entrepreneurs, and extension officers. Workshops, demonstration farms, and outreach programs ensure that innovations reach local communities. KMFRI also collaborates with universities, county governments, and international partners to tackle challenges such as climate change, water pollution, and invasive species, advancing sustainable fisheries and aquaculture technologies in Kenya.
By combining research, training, and policy guidance, KMFRI strengthens Kenya’s Blue Economy. The institute enhances food security, aquaculture productivity, and economic growth, while safeguarding aquatic resources for future generations. KMFRI ensures that Kenya’s fisheries and aquaculture sectors remain productive, resilient, and profitable.
