Kenya Forestry Research Institute(KEFRI)
The Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) leads forestry research and promotes sustainable management of forests and natural resources in Kenya. It was established in 1986 under the Science and Technology Act. KEFRI builds on forestry research that began in 1934 and later regional programs under the East Africa Agricultural and Forestry Organization (EAAFRO). It follows the Forest Conservation and Management Act, 2016, and holds ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015 certifications, ensuring high-quality research and environmental standards.
KEFRI focuses on five main areas. These include improving forest productivity and tree health, managing biodiversity and climate change, developing forest products and entrepreneurship, guiding socio-economic policy, and providing research support services. Moreover, it conducts research across Kenya through five Eco-Region Research Programmes: Coast, Drylands, Central Highlands, Rift Valley, and Lake Victoria. It also runs a National Forest Products Research Programme.
The institute is headquartered in Muguga, with regional centres in Gede, Kitui, Londiani, Maseno, and Karura. KEFRI provides training, technical guidance, and innovative solutions to farmers, policymakers, and stakeholders. These efforts promote climate-smart practices, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable forest management.
KEFRI’s vision is to be a centre of excellence in forestry research. Its mission is to conduct practical research, transfer technology, and build capacity. By combining innovation, training, and stakeholder engagement, KEFRI strengthens livelihoods, supports national development, and enhances environmental resilience. Therefore, its work ensures forests contribute to Kenya’s economic growth, food security, and sustainable development.
