Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation
The Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation (KFIC) is a state corporation established under the State Corporation Act Cap.446 (Legal Notice No. 214 of 23 November 2018 and Legal Notice No. 110 of 22 May 2020). KFIC provides strategic leadership and direction in the exploitation of Kenya’s fishery resources.
The corporation was created to revitalize the fisheries sector and support sustainable development under the Blue Economy Initiative. It focuses on both domestic and high seas fisheries. Kenya’s fisheries are mostly artisanal, but offshore waters and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) remain largely underutilized. Historically, distant-water fishing vessels from Europe and Asia exploited these waters. KFIC now works to build local capacity through joint ventures, modern vessels, and infrastructure. This creates employment and generates foreign exchange.
Kenya lies on the tuna belt, which offers significant export potential. Favorable trade agreements with the European Union allow duty-free access for canned tuna and loins. KFIC aims to make Kenya competitive in the global tuna trade while supporting small-scale fishers, fish processing industries, and related enterprises.
The corporation collaborates with stakeholders across the fisheries value chain. It promotes sustainable practices, increases production, and improves market access. By emphasizing efficiency, innovation, and adherence to international quality standards, KFIC strengthens the fisheries sector. Its work enhances national food security, improves livelihoods, and contributes to economic growth.
Guided by its values of integrity, professionalism, transparency, fairness, and teamwork, Kenya Fishing Industries Corporation protects marine resources. It also expands opportunities for domestic and international trade, positioning Kenya as a key player in regional and global fisheries.
