Kenya Fisheries Service
The Kenya Fisheries Service (KFS) is a government agency established under the Fisheries Management and Development Act No. 35 of 2016. KFS works to conserve, manage, and develop Kenya’s fisheries and aquaculture resources. Its goal is to promote sustainable fishing practices that improve food security, support livelihoods, and boost economic growth.
KFS manages both marine and freshwater fisheries. It enforces licensing, monitors compliance, and applies sustainable management standards. In addition, the agency provides practical guidance on breeding, feeding, disease control, and aquaculture production. By doing so, KFS helps fish farmers and coastal communities maintain healthy and productive fish stocks. This support allows fishers to improve yields, reduce losses, and increase profits.
The service actively develops aquaculture across Kenya. It offers training, access to quality fingerlings, technical support, and demonstration sites for smallholder fish farmers. Moreover, KFS promotes modern production methods, helping farmers adopt efficient and sustainable practices that enhance nutrition and income.
Research and innovation are central to KFS’s work. The agency collaborates with universities, research institutions, county governments, and industry stakeholders. Together, they develop technologies to improve fish health, water quality, and production systems. These insights guide policy, shape management strategies, and protect aquatic ecosystems.
KFS also engages communities and the private sector. Through outreach programs, workshops, and awareness campaigns, it encourages responsible fishing, environmental protection, and better market access.
By combining regulation, research, training, and community engagement, Kenya Fisheries Service strengthens fisheries value chains, safeguards aquatic resources, and supports sustainable development in Kenya.
