Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre(KAGRC)
The Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) conserves, improves, and sustainably utilizes Kenya’s livestock genetic resources. Established in 2011 as the successor to the Central Artificial Insemination Station, KAGRC builds on decades of expertise in breeding, semen production, and livestock genetic improvement.
KAGRC produces, preserves, and distributes high-quality animal germplasm, including semen, embryos, tissues, and elite breeding sires. Its services enhance livestock productivity, support export markets, and maintain disease-free superior genetic material. The centre operates national gene banks, semen and embryo repositories, and manages breeding programs for both dairy and beef cattle, as well as goats.
In collaboration with research institutions, breeding organizations, and county governments, KAGRC implements programs such as contract mating, progeny testing, and indigenous and exotic breed research. These initiatives identify desirable traits like disease resistance, climate adaptability, and high production potential.
The centre provides technical advisory services, training, and capacity building for farmers, extension officers, and breeding institutions. Stakeholders gain knowledge in modern breeding techniques, herd management, record keeping, and strategies for herd improvement. As a result, farmers achieve higher milk yields, faster growth, and improved livestock profitability.
Guided by professionalism, integrity, teamwork, and customer focus, KAGRC aligns its operations with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. Through innovation, research, and technical support, the Centre strengthens Kenya’s livestock sector, promotes food security, and ensures healthy, productive livestock populations nationwide.
