Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), located in Juja, 36 kilometres northeast of Nairobi, is a leading institution in Kenya focused on training, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Established in 1981 as Jomo Kenyatta College of Agriculture and Technology (JKCAT) with support from the Japanese Government, the university was upgraded to a full university in 1994 under the JKUAT Act. The campus was built on 200 hectares of farmland donated by Kenya’s founding president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, reflecting its strong agricultural heritage and commitment to applied learning.

The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (COANRE) is central to JKUAT’s mission of producing graduates who drive Kenya’s agricultural transformation. The College integrates classroom learning with extensive practical training on university farms, horticultural fields, livestock units, and experimental plots. This hands-on approach allows students to gain practical experience in crop production, animal sciences, horticulture, agribusiness, soil and water management, and sustainable natural resource utilization.

JKUAT offers diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programmes in Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Sciences, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Economics, Natural Resource Management, and Agribusiness Management. The College conducts research and outreach projects addressing climate-smart agriculture, value chain development, food security, and agricultural innovation, often in partnership with farmers, government agencies, NGOs, and international organizations.

With a strong emphasis on innovation, entrepreneurship, and research, JKUAT equips graduates with the technical competence, leadership skills, and entrepreneurial mindset needed to contribute effectively to Kenya’s agricultural development, food security, and sustainable management of natural resources.
