Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) is a public university established in 2009 as Bondo University College and gained full university status in 2013. Named after Kenya’s first Vice-President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, JOOUST is strategically located in Bondo, near Lake Victoria, offering a serene environment conducive for teaching, research, and innovation. The university currently enrolls over 13,000 students and continues to expand its academic, research, and outreach capacity.
JOOUST is recognized by the Ministry of Education as a science and technology-focused institution, with niche areas including agriculture, food and nutrition security, freshwater sciences, engineering, and renewable energy. The university emphasizes applied learning, innovation, and research, anchored on Kenya Vision 2030, UN Sustainable Development Goals, and African Union Agenda 2063.
The School of Agricultural and Food Sciences (SAFS), located in Siaya town, advances agricultural productivity through demand-driven research, technology transfer, and production of skilled graduates. SAFS comprises two key departments: Plant, Animal and Food Sciences (PAFS) and Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management (AEAM). The school operates on a 50-hectare commercial farm and horticultural fields, integrating practical training with research in crops, livestock, and agribusiness.
JOOUST hosts the Africa Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Use of Insects as Food and Feeds (INSEFOODS), building regional capacity in sustainable food security. It also conducts research in lacustrine and blue economy studies, leveraging Lake Victoria resources.
With world-class laboratories, expert faculty, and a strong community outreach mandate, JOOUST equips students with knowledge, skills, and innovations to drive sustainable, climate-resilient agriculture and food security in Kenya and the region.
