ILRI-International Livestock Research Institute

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is a global leader in livestock research, dedicated to improving livelihoods, food security, and environmental sustainability in developing countries. Established in 1994 through the merger of ILRAD and ILCA, ILRI is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and co-hosted by the Government of Ethiopia. With 14 offices across Africa and Asia and a team of approximately 700 professionals, ILRI works closely with farmers, universities, research centers, civil society, and the private sector to deliver practical, locally adapted solutions.

ILRI’s research focuses on building equitable and resilient livestock systems, enhancing animal health, nutrition, and productivity, and promoting climate-smart livestock practices. Its programs include disease control, feed and forage improvement, genetics and breeding, and livestock value chain development. By supporting smallholder farmers, ILRI helps increase productivity, income, and resilience, while ensuring environmental conservation.

The institute also champions gender equality, youth empowerment, and social inclusion, ensuring that women and marginalized farmers benefit from its innovations. Through capacity-building initiatives, ILRI trains farmers and researchers on sustainable livestock management practices, helping communities adopt improved breeding techniques, feed strategies, and animal health interventions.

ILRI partners with global initiatives such as CGIAR and collaborates with national research institutes, universities, and private companies. Its work contributes to sustainable food, land, and water systems, aligning with international goals such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Notable projects include livestock disease prevention in East Africa, climate-resilient forage systems, and integrated crop-livestock farming models.

By combining research, innovation, and local engagement, ILRI strengthens livestock production, safeguards ecosystems, and improves livelihoods across Africa and Asia. Its holistic approach ensures that livestock systems are productive, sustainable, and resilient to climate change.
