ICIPE
The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) is a leading research institution focused on insect science in tropical regions. It is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and was founded in 1970 by Prof. Thomas Risley Odhiambo. The Centre studies insects that affect agriculture, human health, and the environment.
icipe’s mission is to enhance food security, public health, and livelihoods. It develops affordable and environmentally friendly tools to manage harmful and beneficial insects. The Centre follows the 4H approach, addressing Human, Animal, Plant, and Environmental Health together.
The Centre researches pests that affect cereals and horticultural crops. It also studies disease vectors like mosquitoes and tsetse flies. At the same time, icipe supports beneficial insects, including pollinators and silk-producing species. These efforts promote climate-smart agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and reduced chemical pesticide use. Notable innovations include push–pull technology, integrated pest management, biological control, vector control strategies, and pollination research.
Capacity building is a key focus at icipe. The Centre trains scientists, extension officers, and farmers while empowering women and youth. icipe employs over 400 staff and collaborates with more than 200 universities, research institutes, governments, and development partners worldwide. As Africa’s only international institution focused on arthropods, icipe strengthens sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and rural livelihoods across tropical regions.
